Students Gain Hands-on Biomanufacturing Experience

Montgomery County Community College and Bucks County Community College students among participants at biomanufacturing boot camp

A cohort of community college students from across the nation, including Montgomery County Community College biotechnology students Sean Heron and Hong Zhu and Bucks County Community College student Raechel Mandrot, attended a Biomanufacturing Boot Camp from March 7-11, 2016, at the BioNetwork Capstone Center in North Carolina. The boot camp was sponsored by the Community College Consortium for Bioscience Credentials (c3bc), and funded by a DOL TAACCCT round two grant. During the week-long instructional workshop, participants completed the simulated batch production of a biological material. At the camp, students received in-depth classroom instruction in bioprocessing and participated in hands-on activities using pilot-scale equipment and instrumentation. Highlights of the outstanding training included bioreactor fermentation, chromatography purification, final fill, and analytical testing procedures.

This workshop is truly remarkable, however, in that the students experienced biomanufacturing operations in a state-of-the art cGMP-like facility. For the participating students, this unique setting afforded exceptional training in a production-level environment and provided invaluable real-world experience in bioprocessing. The participation in this workshop, therefore, should continue to benefit the students as they transition from the classroom to the workplace.
